Overview
Texas passed permitless carry in 2021 and preempts local gun ordinances. The state has witnessed several mass shootings including Sutherland Springs (2017, 26 killed), El Paso Walmart (2019, 23 killed), and Uvalde elementary school (2022, 21 killed).
2026 Political Impact
Uvalde (21 killed, including 19 children) created enormous pressure for reform. Texas passed only incremental school security measures, not gun restrictions. Uvalde families have become a powerful advocacy force.
