Energy System Overview
Utah has been a coal-dependent state (coal mined heavily in Carbon and Emery counties) but is transitioning to solar rapidly. The state has excellent solar resources and Rocky Mountain Power has major solar development plans. Coal mining job losses are politically significant in rural Utah.
2026 Political Impact
Utah Republicans are more open to clean energy than many red state counterparts due to strong solar economics. Tech companies (Amazon, Google, Microsoft) with major Utah operations have pushed for clean energy.
