Energy System Overview
Virginia passed the Virginia Clean Economy Act (2020) requiring 100% clean electricity by 2045. Dominion Energy is building the largest offshore wind project in the US (Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind). The data center boom in Northern Virginia drives enormous electricity demand.
2026 Political Impact
Virginia is a genuine purple state on energy. Clean energy jobs and data center power demands are growing issues. Republican Gov. Youngkin tried to withdraw from RGGI but was blocked. 2026 House races will feature energy costs.
