What Changed from 2020

Hispanic Shift in AZ & NV

Latino voters shifted sharply toward Trump in border states, driven by concerns about the economy and immigration. In Arizona's Maricopa County — home to Phoenix — the shift was pronounced enough to swing the state by nearly 6 points. Nevada was the exception, where union-organized Latino communities in Las Vegas held more firmly for Harris.

Philadelphia Suburbs Didn't Hold

Biden's 2020 Pennsylvania win was built on huge margins in the Philadelphia collar counties — Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, Bucks. Harris underperformed in these suburbs, failing to replicate Biden's anti-Trump coalition there. College-educated suburban Republicans who had broken for Biden in 2020 returned to the party in 2024.

Blue Wall Fell: MI & WI

Michigan and Wisconsin had been part of the "Blue Wall" that Trump broke in 2016 before Biden rebuilt it in 2020. In 2024 both flipped again. In Michigan, Arab-American and Muslim voters in the Dearborn area — angered by Biden-Harris Middle East policy — either stayed home or voted third-party, reducing Democratic margins. In Wisconsin, non-college white voters in the Fox Valley shifted further right.

Atlanta Metro Not Enough in GA

Biden's 2020 Georgia win was a historic upset driven by massive turnout in Atlanta's suburbs — Gwinnett, Cobb, Fulton. In 2024, Trump limited the damage in suburban Atlanta while consolidating rural Georgia by wider margins. The Atlanta metro grew but could not offset Trump's gains across the rest of the state, resulting in a comfortable 2-point Trump win.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many electoral votes did Trump win in 2024?

Donald Trump won 312 electoral votes in 2024, against Kamala Harris's 226. He needed 270 to win and exceeded that threshold by sweeping Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arizona, North Carolina, Michigan, and Wisconsin, while Harris held only Nevada among the key battlegrounds.

Which swing states did Harris win in 2024?

Harris won only Nevada among the seven main battleground states, with a margin of approximately +3.1 points. She lost Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arizona, Michigan, Wisconsin, and North Carolina — a near-complete sweep for Trump in the competitive states that decide presidential elections.

Why did Trump win Pennsylvania in 2024?

Trump won Pennsylvania by roughly 4.5 points — a dramatic improvement over his narrow 2020 loss. Harris underperformed Biden in the Philadelphia collar counties (traditionally anti-Trump suburbs), while Trump gained in rural and working-class communities across the western and central parts of the state. Economic dissatisfaction, particularly around inflation and manufacturing jobs, was a key driver.

Which states did Trump flip from 2020 to 2024?

Trump flipped five states from Biden's 2020 column: Pennsylvania (19 EV), Georgia (16 EV), Arizona (11 EV), Michigan (15 EV), and Wisconsin (10 EV). Combined with retaining North Carolina and narrowly losing Nevada, this produced a decisive 312-226 Electoral College result — a total reversal from 2020 when Biden won 306-232.
